Summary Description PDF Print E-mail

A short description of the main characteristics of the CVT Warko.

Modularity , wide ratio range (= 9 ! ) and absence

of clutch
are the most important characteristics of

Warko, the new CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission)

shown in preview presentation during the 6th International

CTI Symposium of Innovative Automotive Transmission, in

Berlin, 3-7 December 2007.

Adding high efficiency (95%), high torque capability (120

to 500Nm), and compactness ( length: less than 36 cm;

diameter: 31 cm; weight: max 60 kg), Warko has the right

numbers to become, in the near future, a MUST in Automotive.

Warko: Technical characteristics – Without clutch PDF Print E-mail

COMPLEX8.jpg

Here follows the study of a particular characteristic of Warko,
which allows to avoid the use of the clutch.

As we have already seen in another article, the clutch allows to gradually
connect the motion of two shafts that rotate at different speeds, in order, for
instance, to move a car with internal-combustion engine, without switching off
the engine, and employing the traction not instantaneously through a gear, but
progressively.

Applications of the Warko CVT PDF Print E-mail

Adopting a CVT transmission, instead of a traditional mechanical transmision, many advantages can be obtained, in relation to a better use of the engine.

The advantage consists in the possibility that the engine always works at its maximum efficiency/torque speed.

The most interesting applications are the following:

- Wind generators
- Busses
- Trucks
- Hybrid vehicles
- Outboard marine engines
- Agricultural machinery

As far as wind generators are concerned, our CVT inserted between the blade and the generator can keep the generator in constant rotation as well as in phase with the AC power grid.It can also widen the range of winds suitable for this application, since winds are variable.

In particular, Warko has already been studied for applications in the earth-moving machinery and building fields. As for the latter, it can substitute the current hydraulic transmissions, for a wider variation range (1:1 – 1:9), and for a sensitively higher efficiency compared with the present-day solutions (95% vs 75%).

Warko: Technical characteristics – Traditional clutch PDF Print E-mail

COMPLEX-Clutch.jpg

Considering a traditional motion transmission chain in the automobile field, one of the main components, apart from the ratio variation, is the clutch macro-component .

The clutch is a mechanical gear that connects two shafts in order to allow or to avoid the transmission of the rotatory motion.

In other words, the clutch allows to gradually connect the motion of two shafts that rotate at different speeds, in order to move, for instance, an internal combustion engine car without switching off the engine, nor employing the traction instantaneously by means of a gear, but progressively.

The clutch inserted in the transmission between the engine and the gearbox, allows the temporary break of the output torque caused by the engine, in order to allow the speed variation, and it disconnects the wheels from the engine when the car is staedy, keeping the unit switched on.

Warko: Technical characteristics – Weight and overall dimentions PDF Print E-mail

There are some other important factors regarding the practical application of a CVT: its weight and its overall dimensions.

If we examine the Warko CVT , both of these parameters are particularly interesting.

Weight

As regards the Warko CVT in its 8 cones configuration (maximum torque), its weight is about 60 Kg excluding the electronic station and the mechanisms for the actuators and the lubrication.

Warko: Technical characteristics – Efficiency PDF Print E-mail

If we examine the Warko CVT from the functioning point of view, one of the parameters that better describe its working and its application is efficiency.

The total mechanical efficiency of the Warko CVT (included the actuation and lubrication mechanisms) ranges from 84% (least) to 94% (most).

Efficiency changes in relation to the variation of the transmission ratio; it depends on the coupling geometry and on the working pressure in the coupling cone/bell.

It is important to specify that the above results are achieved by means of a basic traction fluid (Findett' Santotrac 50). We will soon test different more efficient fluids that we exspect will increase the CVT's performance.

Warko: technical characteristics - Transmittable torque PDF Print E-mail
To examine the Warko CVT from the operational technical charateristics point of view, one of the first parameters to analyze is the transmittable torque.

The Warko CVT is able to transmit as much as 400 Nm with petrol engines and as much as 500 Nm with diesel engines.
